Songlian, a 19-year-old university student, is forced to marry and become the fourth wife. Even though she lives under the rules of the master, she competes and rebels against others for power status, and privilege which leads to her going completely insane.
This film doesn’t have a title sequence, so we wanted to tell the story of Songlian as the red lantern that is shown throughout the movie.
Concept
A red lantern goes through three abstract phases of a journey: silence, conflict, and chaos. The lantern comes to realize that it is no longer in control of itself. It tears away the outer layer, representing tradition, and reveals the inner layer, its true self.
